Master the ACT — Targeted 1-on-1 ACT Preparation
The ACT is accepted by all US colleges and tests English, Maths, Reading and Science. Our tutors prepare students to maximise their composite score.
In a nutshell
Age range
Typically taken by students aged 15–18 in Grades 10–12, the same cohort applying to US colleges.
What it is
A standardised US college admissions test scored 1–36 composite, covering English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. An optional Writing section is scored separately.
Why it matters
Virtually every US college accepts the ACT. A strong composite score strengthens applications and can qualify students for merit-based scholarships at many institutions.
How we help
Section-by-section tutoring with diagnostics, timed drills, Science reasoning strategies, and full mock ACTs to track composite score improvement.
Is this right for your child?
- Your child prefers curriculum-based questions or excels in science reasoning — the ACT Science section suits analytical thinkers.
- You are applying to US universities and want an alternative or supplement to the SAT with a different section structure.
- Your child struggles with SAT-style adaptive testing and may perform better on the ACT's straightforward, linear format.
- You need flexible online tutoring with a tutor who knows each ACT section's timing demands and question patterns.
What is the ACT?
The ACT (American College Testing) is a standardised test accepted by virtually every college and university in the United States for undergraduate admissions. Unlike the SAT, the ACT includes a dedicated Science section, making it particularly suited to students with strong scientific reasoning abilities.
The ACT is scored on a composite scale of 1–36, calculated as the average of four section scores. The optional Writing section (scored separately) is required by some universities.
Section breakdown
English (45 minutes, 75 questions)
- • Tests grammar, usage, punctuation, sentence structure and rhetorical skills
- • Topics: subject-verb agreement, comma usage, transitions, essay organisation
Mathematics (60 minutes, 60 questions)
- • Covers Pre-Algebra through Trigonometry: algebra, geometry, functions, statistics, basic trigonometry
- • Calculators permitted throughout
Reading (35 minutes, 40 questions)
- • Reading comprehension across four passage types: literary narrative, social science, humanities, and natural science
Science (35 minutes, 40 questions)
- • Scientific reasoning and interpretation rather than factual recall
- • Covers data representation, research summaries and conflicting viewpoints
What your child's prep plan looks like
Baseline assessment
First 1–2 weeks
A full diagnostic ACT establishes composite and section scores (English, Maths, Reading, Science). We identify which sections drag the composite down and set a realistic target score.
Section-focused training
Weekly sessions
Lessons rotate through weak sections with timed practice. Science reasoning strategies, English grammar drills, and Maths pacing are built in parallel so no section is neglected.
Full mocks and test-day prep
Approaching exam date
Full-length timed ACT simulations with composite score tracking. Final sessions address stamina, section transitions, and the optional Writing section if your target universities require it.
How We Help with ACT Preparation
At TheLearningMaths, we provide ACT-specialised tutoring that goes beyond content — we teach students how to think strategically under timed exam conditions. Our tutors understand the specific demands of each ACT section and build both subject knowledge and test technique simultaneously.
Our ACT preparation includes: full diagnostic test to establish your baseline score, personalised study plan targeting your weakest sections first, weekly timed section practice with detailed feedback, strategy sessions covering time management and question-type recognition, and regular full mock ACTs to track score improvement over time.
Common challenges — and how we fix them
The Science section feels unfamiliar
Our approach: ACT Science tests reasoning and data interpretation, not memorised facts. We teach passage-scanning techniques, graph-reading shortcuts, and how to handle conflicting viewpoints efficiently.
English section timing pressure
Our approach: With 75 questions in 45 minutes, pacing is critical. We drill grammar patterns (comma rules, transitions, subject-verb agreement) so your child recognises errors quickly without re-reading entire passages.
Maths covers too many topics
Our approach: We map the ACT Maths syllabus — Pre-Algebra through basic Trigonometry — and prioritise the topic areas that appear most frequently, building confidence on high-yield question types first.
Composite score stuck despite section practice
Our approach: Sometimes one weak section caps the composite average. We analyse section-by-section trends and may temporarily weight tutoring toward the section with the greatest composite impact.
