Test Prep

NAPLAN Ready — Expert Preparation for Australia’s National Assessment

NAPLAN tests are taken by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia. Our tutors prepare children at every level with targeted, age-appropriate preparation.

NAPLAN (National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy) is a series of Australian national tests assessing students’ skills in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions, and Numeracy. Results are used by parents, schools, and governments to identify areas needing improvement. At TheLearningMaths, we provide structured NAPLAN preparation that builds skills progressively and reduces exam anxiety.

In a nutshell

Age range

Students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 across Australia — typically ages 8–15 depending on year group.

What it is

NAPLAN (National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy) is an annual online national test assessing Reading, Writing, Language Conventions, and Numeracy.

Why it matters

Results help parents and schools identify literacy and numeracy gaps early. Strong performance builds confidence; targeted prep reduces anxiety and ensures children are not caught off guard by format or timing.

How we help

Age-appropriate 1-on-1 tutoring with NAPLAN-style practice, timed tasks, mock sessions, and calm strategies that build skills without pressure.

Is this right for your child?

  • Your child is in Year 3, 5, 7, or 9 and you want structured preparation before the May assessment window.
  • Previous NAPLAN results flagged areas needing support — Reading, Writing, Language Conventions, or Numeracy.
  • Your child feels anxious about timed tests and benefits from familiarising with the online NAPLAN format in advance.
  • You want a tutor who understands ACARA standards and tailors lessons to your child's specific year-level expectations.

What is NAPLAN?

NAPLAN (National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy) is an annual assessment taken by Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It is administered online and assesses skills in four areas: Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation), and Numeracy.

NAPLAN is managed by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA). Results are used by parents, schools and governments to understand student progress and identify areas needing additional support. The test is held once a year, typically in May.

Unlike school assessments, NAPLAN is standardised across all states and territories — making it a consistent national benchmark for literacy and numeracy skills.

Why NAPLAN Preparation Matters

Builds Core Skills Early

NAPLAN tests fundamental literacy and numeracy skills that underpin success in all other subjects. Strong preparation reinforces these foundations.

Reduces Exam Anxiety

Familiarity with the format, timing and question types significantly reduces test anxiety. Students who practise perform more confidently.

Identifies Gaps Before They Grow

Targeted preparation reveals specific areas where your child needs support — allowing them to be addressed before they affect secondary school performance.

What your child's prep plan looks like

1

Skills assessment

First sessions

We review your child's current literacy and numeracy through NAPLAN-style tasks matched to their year level. This reveals specific gaps in reading comprehension, writing structure, spelling, grammar, or maths reasoning.

2

Targeted skill building

Weekly sessions leading to May

Lessons focus on weak areas with age-appropriate explanations. Writing practice covers narrative and persuasive formats; numeracy covers the operations and reasoning expected at each year level.

3

Mock assessments and confidence building

Final weeks before NAPLAN

Timed mock sessions replicate the online test experience. We practise calm pacing, checking work, and managing nerves so your child walks in prepared rather than anxious.

Common challenges — and how we fix them

Test anxiety in younger year groups

Our approach: We introduce NAPLAN-style tasks gradually, celebrating progress and keeping sessions positive. Familiarity with question types and timing reduces the unknowns that trigger anxiety.

Writing under time pressure

Our approach: Structured templates for narrative and persuasive writing help children plan quickly. We practise brainstorming, paragraph structure, and editing within realistic time limits.

Numeracy word problems

Our approach: We teach step-by-step decoding of word problems — identifying operations, drawing diagrams, and checking whether answers are reasonable — at the level expected for each year group.

Language Conventions errors

Our approach: Spelling, grammar, and punctuation are drilled through short, focused exercises. We target the conventions most commonly tested at your child's year level rather than overwhelming with every rule.

Our approach

Sessions mirror NAPLAN-style tasks while keeping explanations calm and age-appropriate so students feel prepared, not pressured.

What to expect

Parents receive regular feedback on practice performance and areas still developing. Children gain literacy and numeracy skills that extend beyond NAPLAN itself, along with the calm confidence to perform under timed online conditions.
